Social Media
The protests were largely organized and publicized through social media. The protesters had little trust in the traditional media establishment, much of which was owned by media moguls with ties to the government. They saw it as their responsibility to spread the news about the protests to the wider public. Social media channels were also used extensively among the protesters themselves to plan gatherings and communicate police movements so that people knew which areas to avoid.
